By Adding New Ram Does It Remove All That Is There? Does Quickbooks Go Away? Can I Just Add Another Stick?

My system is so slow. I was told to add RAM, so I got a memory stick. Can i add it to the one that is there or do I remove the one that came with the computer? Will everything go away? ie: Quick-books, my sons HS reports, iTunes, etc.
